Andrée Putman, 20th century icon

Andrée Putman’s (1925–2013) legacy continues through her studio. The French icon of design established a style that is refined, bold, and profoundly modern, blending classicism with contemporary radicalism. Under the new ownership of Aurélie Laure, and guided jointly with Olivia Putman in artistic direction, the agency enters a phase of renewal that balances continuity with reinvention.

His exceptional skill, deep respect for materials, and innovative approach to color and light have made him one of the leading figures in contemporary French design. She gained international recognition with the Morgans Hotel in New York in 1984, the world’s first boutique hotel, and went onto transform French interiors by opening up spaces and anticipating what would later become the loft spirit.

Her imprint endures through emblematic projects such as the Concorde, the staircases of Le Bon Marché in Paris, numerous hotels, The Putman tower in Hong Kong, and several French ministries including Culture, Finance, and Education. Her work continues to appear in museums, boutiques, and private residences around the world. A visionary who consistently challenged convention, she collaborated with leading Houses including LVMH, Christofle, Veuve Clicquot, Montblanc, Guerlain, and Nespresso.

Andrée Putman holds a singular place in the history of modern design. Her aesthetic clarity, mastery of proportion, and chromatic sobriety have shaped the visual language of contemporary interiors. She introduced a new relationship between function and beauty, helped define the sensibility of luxury hospitality, and opened new pathways for collaborations between design and visual culture.

The year 2025 marks both the centenary of Andrée Putman’s birth and a defining moment for her studio. Under the new ownership of Aurélie Laure, and guided jointly with Olivia Putman in artistic direction, the agency enters a phase of renewal that balances continuity with reinvention.

Together, Aurélie and Olivia articulate a shared vision: to honor the precision, humor, and radical clarity of Andrée Putman’s vocabulary while expanding its scope for a contemporary audience. This new stewardship introduces a renewed momentum, one that is attentive to heritage yet firmly oriented toward the future.
